Emma's Schaaktoernooi

Een paar buurtgenoten (Roelof Veenstra, Herman Nijboer, Johan & Erik Frima) organiseerden op 17 juni samen met de Haagse Schaakbond het eerste Emma's Schaaktoernooi. Aan 10 borden speelden beginners, gevorderden en aanstaande kampioenen om de eer en een beker. Ook op deze dag waren de weergoden ons goed gezind: een heerlijk zonnetje, een prima temperatuur. Tussen de partijen door wandelden sommigen zwijgzaam door de tuin, zich voorbereidend op een volgende confrontatie. Anderen analyseerden achter de borden hun zo juist gespeelde partij. Wat een stilte in de stadstuin als de schaakklokken aangingen en de eerste stukken werden verzet. Er werd natuurlijk meer thee, koffie en spa gedronken dan bier en wijn.
Het toernooi werd gewonnen door onze Poolse buurtgenoot Janek Eberle Bijzondere waardering was er voor de de tienjarige Cor Kanters. Na de reguliere partijen stond Cor met nog twee deelnemers op een gedeelde tweede plaats. Cor versloeg na drie partijen snelschaak beide opponenten. Hij mocht de beker voor de tweede prijs mee naar huis nemen. Jaco Arkesteijn eindigde als derde.
